SAVE YOURSELF. MAKE ART. REPEAT.

SIGNY X Saint Loretto

We sat down with alt-pop crooner Evan Crowley of Saint Loretto to talk about his new single “New Normal" and his deconstructed after-office-hours look.

SIGNY: What’s the story behind your single, “New Normal”?

EVAN: The song, for me, was about all of the things we were experiencing pre-pandemic. Then the pandemic happened, and we thought that it would be some sort of a course correction, but it didn’t end up being that.

We doubled down on what already was, and it was basically business as usual. So “New Normal” is sort of an ironic statement — because nothing’s new and nothing’s normal, right?

SIGNY: Who’s your style icon?

EVAN: I don’t know; I guess my style is just stuff that I like, stuff that I gravitate toward. I’m doing this disheveled suit thing because I feel like we’re all trying to pretend we have it together, and we don’t, and I fuckin’ don’t. That’s why I don’t have a tie on or anything. I’m going to look worse as the night goes on, but I look like I’m trying.

SIGNY: What bands do the best job aligning their style with their music?

EVAN: There are so many, especially in Austin. But I kind of like bands that subvert their style with their music — like they have a specific fashion that doesn’t make any sense with what they do.

I guess I really love that. Like y’all were talking about, people don’t pay as much attention to a band’s style, but if you look, so many bands have such cool fashion sense. And it might not have anything to do with their music. Or it might have everything to do with it, but it’s just such a cool extra piece of it.

As for me, I just kinda do my own thing, and maybe it makes sense sometimes, but probably most of the time, it doesn’t.

SIGNY: Where’s your favorite place to shop in Austin?

EVAN: I actually don’t shop in Austin. I don’t know if that’s a bad deal...

SIGNY: Not at all! Tell us where you shop!

EVAN: Bad Granny’s Bazaar in Oklahoma City. It’s sick — the owner used to have shows in her Bazaar, and kids would get a place to play when they couldn’t play at other venues.

They do booths and stuff, but everything is heavily curated — all the clothes are awesome. Most of what I have is from there. And then my friend Katie is like an upcycler, so every time I’m in town, she hooks me up. So shout out to @ _feelinsnazzy

I tend to like to try to buy old stuff, just because I feel like fast fashion is just so bad for the environment — not to say that you should never do it. I mean, I buy new jeans sometimes, but I try to buy used clothes if I can since they already exist.
